Johnny Cash est l'un des artistes les plus
renommés de la musique country américaine. Né
en 1932 et élevé dans l'Arkansas, le jeune Johnny
écrit ses 1ère chansons à l'âge de 12
ans. Il rejoint l'Air Force pendant la Guerre de Corée puis,
de retour au pays, il s'installe à Memphis. En 1955, il y
décroche une audition avec Sam Phillips, le fondateur de Sun
Records, qui l'engage. Le titre Cry Cry Cry lance sa
carrière. Les années passent et le succès du
"Man in Black" (c'est son surnom) grandit. En 1968, il signe son
album le plus populaire Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison et
apparaît l'année suivante sur l'album de Bob Dylan
Nashville Skyline. Sa popularité atteint son
paroxysme au début des années 70 avec son
émission de télé The Johnny Cash Show
avant de décliner irrémédiablement au cours de
la décennie. En 1982, il enregistre avec Carl Perkins et
Jerry Lee Lewis l'album The Survivors puis participe au
groupe The Highwaymen avec qui il signe plusieurs disques. En solo,
il regagne une certaine crédibilité dans les
années 90 et enregistre à un rythme soutenu,
notamment les albums American III: Solitary Man (2000) et
American IV: The Man Comes Around (2002). Le matin du 12
septembre 2003, Johnny Cash meurt à l'âge de 73 ans
suite à des complications dues à son
diabète.
